The English surname Stonestreet, is of toponymic origin deriving from a man-made distinction of the local landscape or area in which the initial bearer once lived or held land, thus affording him a suitable means of identity in his local community. In this instance we have "at the stone street", i.e. the paved road, from the residence thereat. The name derives from the Old English term "Stanstraet," referring to the paved Roman road in the county of Essex which ran through Colchester, whilst the Sussex reference was to Stanistreet, the Roman road which ran from Chichester to London. The first element "Stone" was frequently found in many compound names in Britain, always denoting its literal meaning. The fashion of adding surnames began in Britain in the thirteenth century, when the population was becoming more complex and there was a need to be able to distinguish reliably between individuals for many reasons. A number of methods evolved including this one, the toponymic.

Among the early written references to the name or a variant form we read of one called Salomon de Stonstret in the Hundred Rolls for the county of Kent in 1275, and in 1276 the same Rolls for Berkshire referred to Stephen de Stanstred. In the Feet of Fines Rolls for Essex in 1279 we read of Elias de Stonestrete, and from Sussex of Richard atte Stanstreete in the year 1293. Two marriages were recorded, in the year 1664 that of John Coppin to Sarah Stonistreet, and in the year 1754 that of William Box to Mary Stonestreet at St. George's church, Hanover Square, London. Among early references to the introduction of the name into America we read of the arrival in Maryland in the year 1662, of Thomas Stonestreet and his wife Anne, upon their emigration from England.

This photo is of his great great great grand parents. Harriet nee Stonestreet and Stephen Hallaway. As you can see from the photo it was taken by J.W Thomas of 4? George Street Hastings, anyone know if there is still a photographers at this address?

Mark has also sent the following information. I am descended from Henry Stonestreet (b. 1761 Warbleton, Sussex) and Sarah Waters. Their daughter was Lucy, who had a number of illegitimate children, one of whom was Hans Ward Stonestreet, my gt gt gt gt grandfather. He lived and worked in Brightling, and married Eleanor Veness November 13 1832. Their daughter Harriet Stonestreet (b. 17 May 1839 in Brightling) was a servant girl at Socknersh Farm, where she met Stephen Hallaway (b. 17 may 1831) the son of the rich farmer John Hallaway (b. Abt. 1778). They got married 24 December 1859 in Hastings, and we have been told by my great grandmother that Stephen was disowned by his father for marrying a servant. They were my great great great grandparents.

As many of the Stonestreet's originated from Sussex I thought it fitting to have the the Sussex song recorded here. You can also hear the music that goes with the words from here or find out more about it's history from The Royal Sussex Regiment web site

Sussex by the Sea

Now is the time for marching
Now let your hearts be gay
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way
So let your voices ring , my boys
And take your time from me
And I'll sing you a song as we march along
Of Sussex by the Sea.

For we're the men from Sussex
Sussex by the Sea,
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful men are we:
And when you come to Sussex,
Whoever you may be,
You can tell them all that we'll stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea.

Oh Sussex, Sussex by the Sea
Good old Sussex by the Sea
You can tell them all that we'll stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea.

Light is the love of a soldier
That's what the ladies say
Lightly he goes a wooing
Lightly he rides away
In love and war, we always are
As fair as fair can be,
And a soldier boy is the ladies' joy
In Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus & Refrain

Far o'er the seas we wander
Wide through the world we roam,
Far from the kind hearts yonder
Far from the dear old home,
But never shall we forget my boys
And true we'll every be
To the girls so kind that we've left behind
In Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus & Refrain

Ellen Stonestreet was my great-grandmother born in 1856, the daughter of

William Stonestreet of Peers Cooperage, Lambeth, London. He was the

pipe-maker and Ellen married my great-grandfather John Rossi (Italian

extraction) in about 1875 and they carried on the clay pipe making business

until about the 1920s. My father remembers visiting them in Tabard Street,

Southwark, south London when he was a child (born 1912).

I live in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, UK

William Stonestreet's wife was also called Ellen and from their marriage

certificate know her maiden name to be Ennis; therefore an Irish connection

there I suspect.

That's all I know. Best wishes to fellow researchers.

I am a Stonestreet and have come across your web site whilst trying to do my family tree. I thought you might be interested in seeing what I have found so far? http://freespace.virgin.net/super.k/ James Stonestreet is my Nephew and the latest addition to my side of the family so he is my starting point. I am not sure if you have any information that can help me getting any further but would be very interested if you do. Thanks

Can anyone help?

My name is Jim Stonestreet.

I currently reside in Austin, Texas but my grandparents were from Kentucky. I can trace my family history back to Ben and Amanda Stonestreet.  I believe Ben was one of four brothers that travelled from England to the US in the 19th century.

Is this correct get in contact with me and I'll put you in contact with Jim

Tony contacted me from Sydney, Australia, his message was,

I was hoping that we may share some common ancestry and exchange information, etc. One of my wife's ancestors was a Mary Ann Stonestreet, who was born in 1792 in Hastings, Sussex. „ Mary Ann's father was Abraham Stonestreet who was born in 1763 in Rye (I do not know the death date or location but most probably pre-1837).  Mary Ann's mother was Sara Stonestreet (nee Baker, 1767 ¡V 1847).  The parents of Abraham were Thomas Stonestreet and Ann Baulkham who married in 1762 in Brede.  They had at least 2 children (ie, Abraham and Septimus) This was Thomas's second (?) marriage. He had previously married Sarah Howard in 1746 in Rye and had 6 children by that marriage. The 1746 marriage record states that Thomas was a sojourner ie, a short term resident of Rye (ie, 1746 in Rye)  I estimate that Thomas was born circa 1720 ¡V his parents may have been John and Martha (guess work because these were the only likely burial records for adult Stonestreet's in Rye that I could locate). I've researched the Rye parish records and the Stonestreet is a very uncommon surname  with no occurrences in the BDMs prior to 1746. I noticed that Rye is not very far from Northiam ¡V hence my contacting you. Burwash is somewhat further a field. But as you can see from details above, my Stonestreets tended to move about. I did however locate a burial record for Septimus Stonestreet in 1788 (the brother of Abraham?) in Winchelsea parish register. If you can find any connection to your STONESTREET family then I would appreciate any information that you could provide ¡V especially the parents of Thomas Stonestreet (born c1720) or fill in any other details. I can provide a few more details or try to answer any of your questions as well.

Best regards, Tony Beggs (Sydney, Australia) March 14th 2005

This was sent to me over Christmas 2005 by William (Bill) McVicar, if you think you might be able to help let me know and I'll put you in contact with Bill.

I am trying to develop some information on the Stonestreets in western Panama on the Mosquito Gulf.  I married a Stonestreet, she descended from an Englishman,  Joseph Stonestreet,  who seems to have arrived in Panama in the late 19th century.  He 'went native' while moiling for gold along the Caribbean coast of Panama in the area of the Cricamola River.  Joseph Stonestreet took a Guaymi Indian woman to wife and from thence descended the local Stonestreet line through now four generations (sometimes recorded "Stonestreeth" by Spanish speaking recorders).  He took gold 'huacas" from the many Guaymi burial mounds that dotted the area.  Joseph left one day bound for Costa Rica and never returned for whatever reason.  He apparently was hauling the booty up to the area of Limon, Costa Rica, as we have encountered another Stonestreet line there dating back to that epoch.

Peter Stonestreet got in contact in early Feb 06.

He's from Hampshire and not a million miles away from where I live in West Sussex. Although Peter has only very recently moved to the South Coast his family have much long roots here. So far he has managed to trace his family back to James Stonestreet from St Mary's in Dover.

James died sometime before the 29th of Aug 1874 he was married to Susannah Podevin? and his occupation was as a gunner with the Royal Artillery. He had at least one son and his name was Nimrod Frederick Stonestreet b. 1845 St Mary's Dover.

If you think you have links to Peter please get in contact with me and I will pass on you details to him
